Optimization volume representation

An examination of the Fourier method, which is a special case of an orthogonal collocation representation, elucidates the main considerations of representation theory. It will be shown that by optimizing the representation the quantum limit of one point per unit phase space volume of h can be obtained. Moreover, the Fourier method has great numerical advantages because of the fast nature of the algorithm (22-26). This means that the numerical effort scales semilinearly with the represented volume of phase space (27). [Pg.193]

Apb is the scattering length density difference, Q is Porod s invariant, and Y the mean chord length. For the calculation of Yo(r) we approximated I(q) hy a cubic spline. The equations used for the calculation of " pore and " soUd are to be found in [8,30,39-41,47]. Analytical expressions for the descriptors of RES were published in [10,11,13,42,43]. In its most simple variant, the stochastic optimization procedure evolves the two-point probability S2 (r) of a binary representation of the sample towards S2(r) by randomly excWiging binary ceUs of different phases, starting from a random configuration which meets the preset volume fractions. After each exchange the objective function... [Pg.357]

Today it is recognized that all three approaches (heuristics-based selection, geometric representation, and optimization methods) are useful, and indeed required, for complex process synthesis strategies. This follows because different applications lend themselves to quite different representations. This volume addresses a variety of these synthesis strategies for process subsystems, but represents only a sampling of the state-of-the-art of process synthesis research. The five chapters in this volume address quite different process subsystems and application areas but still combine basic concepts related to a systematic approach. [Pg.419]

FIGURE 11.13. Schematic representation of a lithium miorobattery. It is worth noting that the volume of the intercalation compound determines the cell capacity and that a buffer layer can be inserted between the lithium film and the solid electrolyte film to prevent chemical reaction. When dealing with multivariate molecular representations, one becomes quickly aware of a problem known as the curse of dimensionality. This term was first introduced by Bellman to describe the complexity of combinatorial optimization over many dimensions, where the computational effort was found to scale exponentially with the dimensionality d. In statistics, this expression is used to describe the sparsity of data in higher dimensions. Indeed, our intuition based on two- and three-dimensional geometry is of limited use as we move to high-dimensional spaces. The following two examples illustrate the point. Consider, for instance, the fraction of the volume of a 4-dimensional hypercube contained within the inscribed... [Pg.747]
