Figure 15 Peptide hydrogelator assembles into a fibrillar network (models (A and B) and SEM (C)). When applied to the damaged optic nerve of hamsters with blinding in their right eye, vision is regenerated and the hamster responds to stimulus (a-d). Data (e) indicated that treated hamsters regained circa 80% of vision, whereas untreated animals regained only 10%. (Adapted with permission from Ref. 95, R. G. Ellis-Behnke, Y.-X. Liang, S.-W. In a series of recent experiments, we have examined regeneration of the goldfish visual system at three levels. (1) Ija vivo experiments goldfish in which an optic nerve has previously... [Pg.192]

We have repeated and extended this report to the regenerating visual system of the goldfish. The right optic nerve was crushed, and 7 days later the right eye was injected with 5 yC % mevalon-ate. Unoperated fish served as controls. The fish were killed 4-28 days after the injection. The left tectum, right tectum and right retina were extracted, and pools of three of each tissue were counted. We failed to find a transient peak in the tectal lipid in either the control or in the experimental fish, but did observe arrival of labeled lipid via a slow transport process. [Pg.199]
