Abramson continued to be quite friendly. He invited me to visit him at his home later in the year, to eonverse further. When I arrived at his house in Syosset, Long Island, he gave me an unpublished draft of a report prepared for the CIA fifteen years earlier. He also talked about his involvement in the treatment of Frank Olson, the CIA biologist who had been slipped an LSD mickey in 1953 by MK-ULTRA ehief Dr. Sidney Gottlieb. He beeame paranoid and two weeks later ended up dead on the sidewalk ten stories below his hotel room - allegedly a suieide.

Of course, liquid-hquid extraction also may be a useful option when the components of interest simply cannot be separated by using distillation methods. An example is the use of hquid-liquid extraction employing a steam-strippable solvent to remove nonstrippable, low-volatility contaminants from wastewater [Robbins, Chem. Eng. Prog., 76(10), pp. 58-61 (1980)]. The same process scheme often provides a cost-effective alternative to direct distillation or stripping of volatile impurities when the relative volatility of the impurity with respect to water is less than about 10 [Robbins, U.S. Patent 4,236,973 (1980) Hwang, Keller, and Olson, Ind. Eng. Chem. Res., 31, pp. 1753—1759 (1992) and Frank et al., Ind. Eng. Chem. Res., 46(11), pp. 3774-3786 (2007)]. 

Frank Olson was by no means the only unwitting victim of CIA attempts to discover the effects of LSD and other mind bending drugs. As noted earlier, a decision had been taken soon after the start of MKULTRA that to determine the effects of drugs on intended victims, realistic tests had to be conducted upon unsuspecting clients . In May 1953 the CIA hired one of their more colourful operators to arrange the testing for them. 

Frank Olson, one of the civilian chemists from Fort Detrick, arrived home extremely depressed. Years of experience in Top Secret work had conditioned him to say little about his activities in the laboratories, and when his wife asked him what was wrong he replied only that he had made a mistake and felt that he should leave his job. He was an entirely different person , his wife recalled later, I didn t know what had happened, I just knew that something was terribly wrong .17 Olson remained in this disturbed condition throughoutthe weekend and while at work at Fort Detrick on Monday. By Tuesday his colleagues had decided he needed specialist psychiatric advice. 

At 3.Z0 in the morning the CIA man was awoken by the sound of breaking glass. Ten floors below, the body of Frank Olson lay shattered on Seventh Avenue.
