Oligomers linear wire

A rapid and versatile covalent assembly technique starting from DEE oligomers has provided the 11.9 nm long hexadecameric poly(triacetylene) rod 20.1481 With its linearly conjugated 16 double and 32 triple bonds spanning in-between the terminal silicon atoms, compound 20 is currently the longest linear, fully Jt-conjugated molecular wire without aromatic repeat units in the backbone.

The reaction kinetics is controlled by two factors ki (s-1) for the electron transfer between the nearest redox site and the electrode, and k2 (cm2 mol 1 s-1), for the electron transfer between the neighboring redox sites in a molecular wire. Here, the rate of electron transfer to the neighboring site in a polymer wire is assumed to be constant in a primary approximation. Even though the octayne derivative marked the longest linear diphenylpolyacetylene, multiple phenylacetylene scaffold topologies were developed in the following decade. Representative examples include carbon rods 67 and 68 produced by Misumi in 1961 (Fig. 1.5b) [60], Misumi and coworkers also produced several mixed hybrid scaffolds combining ethenyl and ethynyl spacers, such as 69 (Fig. 1.5b) as well as conformational isomeric ethenyl rods, such as 70, in 1962 [61].
