A study of the polymerization kinetics of methyl methacrylate, in the presence of PBN, and of molecular-mass properties of the obtained polymers shows that the systems react by the pseudoliving mechanism (699). In the first stages of the polymerization process, PBN reacts with oligomeric radicals, forming stable nitroxyl radical-spin adducts A-, see Scheme 2.207.

Early-on it was discovered that these Salen compounds, and the related six-coordinate cations [6], were useful as catalysts for the polymerization of oxiranes. These applications were anticipated in the efforts of Spassky [7] and in the substantial work of Inoue [8]. Subsequently, applications of these compounds in organic synthesis have been developed [9]. Additional applications include their use in catalytic lactide polymerization [10], lactone oligomerization [11], the phospho-aldol reaction [12], and as an initiator in methyl methacrylate polymerization [13]. 

NMR study shows that the block copolymer of styrene-methyl methacrylate is present in the product of esterification. It confirms that the original copolymer consists of blocks of styrene units and the ladder type blocks. Analysis of a few fractions of the copolymer obtained from oligomeric multimonomer and styrene confirmed this type of structure. Data recalculated from publications are presented in Table 5.1.
