Oligomerization aliphatic alkenes

Oligomerization of aliphatic alkenes such as ethylene and propene, and aromatic alkenes, such as styrene, indene and their derivatives, catalyzed by a variety of Lewis acids, such as AlCl.i, BFj, AlBrj, and Brpnsted acids, such as H3PO4, is a well-studied subject. These reactions are important, particularly in the industrial arena. [Pg.331]

While rare-earth metals are proven powerful olefin polymerization catalysts [21-24], there are only limited reports on controlled olefin oligomerizations or selective olefin dimerizations utilizing these elements [204,207,208], An ansa-scandocene [207] and the bis(indenyl)yttrium complex 41 (Fig. 25) [204] were reported to produce head-to-tail dimers from monosubstimted aliphatic alkenes (57). Complex 41 produces predominantly the tail-to tail adduct with styrene. The codimerization of an aliphatic alkene (including substrates containing various functionalities) with styrene affords tran -tail-to-tail dimers, apparently as a result of 1,2-insertion of the a-olefin followed by 2,1-insertion of styrene directed by the phenyl group (58). [Pg.41]

In the case of reactions such as valence isomerization, metathesis reactions of alkenes and alkynes, oligomerization or cyclooligomerization of olefins, metallacycloalkanes are of special importance. Their catalytic efficiency depends on the ease of the M—C bond cleavage, which is the result of reductive elimination of the organic substrate or of /J-hydrogen transfer. Also a- or / -C—C bond rupture has been reported. Heterocycles with an aliphatic carbon skeleton and a donor atom adjacent to the metal are suitable model compounds for the study of individual catalytic steps and structural properties.
