More recently, Mullen et al. have worked out very efficient procedures to generate highly arylaled, branched oligo(phcnylcne) and related oligo(arylcne) derivatives following different synthetic approaches. 

During the past decade, MALDI-TOF MS has proven to be an effective tool for the analysis of oligo- and polymeric mannoglucans (for extensive reviews see [222,223]). SEC/MALDI mass spectrometry was employed in the analysis of hemicelluloses isolated by microwave heat-fractionation from spruce and aspen wood [94]. These methods allowed the separation and characterization of the oligo- and polysaccharide fractions derived from the xylan and mannan components of both woods [224].

In conclusion, a variety of linear or cyclic oligo(phospholes)s and their derivatives are accessible via a set of efficient synthetic strategies. The potential of these compounds as advanced 71-conjugated systems is broadened by the presence of reactive trivalent P-centres, which allow a range of additional chemical modifications to be achieved. However, elucidation of structure-property relationships for these derivatives is still needed. 

The polystyrene derivatives with pendant oligo(oxyethylene)cyclotriphos-phazenes VIII and IX were synthesized by Inoue [614,615] and the ionic conductivity of their complexes with LiCL04 investigated. The maximum ionic conductivity obtained for these complexes are reported in Table 15. 

The second synthetic route consists of the coupling of hexa(4-iodophenyl)ben-zene (34) with an alkylated oligophenylboronic acid to produce a hexa(oligo-phenyl)benzene by extending the aromatic chain [52]. This route is illustrated by the reaction of hexa(4-iodophenyl)benzene (34) with an alkylated terphenyl boronic acid with formation of the hexa(quaterphenyl)benzene derivative 33. Once again, the aliphatic substituents serve to guarantee sufficient solubility. 

Foly(dimethylsiloxane) (silicone rubber) membranes are fabricated by hydrolysis of alkox-ysilyl terminal groups of silicone-rubber precursors [oligo(dimethylsiloxane) derivatives and crosslinking agents], followed by condensation. Covalent bonding of neutral carriers carrying an alkoxysilyl group to silicone rubber is, therefore, feasible by simple reaction of the silicone-rubber precursor with alkoxysilylated neutral carriers, as schematically shown in Scheme 1 [44].

If an individual nucleotide is modified in the appropriate way, various enzymatic techniques can be used to polymerize the derivative into an existing oligonucleotide molecule. Alternatively, nucleotide polymers can be treated with chemical activators that can facilitate the attachment of a label at particular reactive sites. Thus, there are two main approaches to modifying DNA or RNA molecules enzymatic or chemical. Both procedures can produce highly active conjugates for sensitive assays to quantify or localize the binding of an oligo probe to its complementary strand in a complex mixture.
