The development and/or acceptance of experimental animal models for the elucidation of relevant mechanisms requires that the immunological basis or bases for occupational respiratory allergy to chemicals are understood. A major achievement would be the final resolution of the relative importance of homocytotropic antibodies and other immune mechanisms in respiratory sensitization to chemicals. [Pg.90]

The study of occupational allergy to small chemical molecules has much to offer to the clarification of these problems. Certain examples will therefore be discussed in detail because they are models for other as yet unresolved questions, and others will be discussed only briefly, serving to illustrate the wide range of chemical agents identified as causes of occupational respiratory allergy and meriting much further study (Popa et al. 1969 Kobayashi 1974, Pepys and Hutchcroft 1975 Pepys 1977 b Davies et al. 1977 Pepys and Davies 1978). A number of these are therapeutic agents themselves or their precursors, encountered in the pharmaceutical industry. [Pg.163]
