John Bardeen was a truly remarkable scientist, and also a very private, taciturn man. Pippard (1995) in his obituary of Bardeen, recounts how John returned home from the Bell Labs and walked into the kitchen to say We discovered something today to (his wife) Jane s regret, all she could find in reply to what proved a momentous statement was That s interesting, but I have to get dinner on the table . ...

A book of scientific articles in celebration of Boas s 75th birthday (Borland et al. 1979) includes a biographical sketch of Boas by J.F. Nicholas. A substantial account of his life can be found in an obituary by Clarebrough and Head (1987). 

We are saddened to have lost one of the first and foremost pioneers of catalysis, and a member of our Advisory Board, Sir Hugh S. Taylor. The present volume includes an obituary of Sir Hugh written by one who knew him well, John Turkevich. We are further saddened by the untimely passing on July 27, 1973, of a young pioneer, Richard J. Kokes. 

It will be noted that a change in editors has taken place since the publication of Volume 7 in 1975, this change being the first since the inception of the Encyclopedia program in 1958. It was necessitated by the death of Dr Basil T. Fedoroff in December 1976 (see obituary which follows), and the retirement of Mr Oliver E. Sheffield in October 1975 after some 34 years of Federal service, with incumbency atPicatinny Arsenal since January 1943. He authored or co-authored over 40 Picatinny Arsenal Technical Reports and AMC Manuals on explosives, pyrotechnics and propellants. Sheffield is best known as co-editor of this Encyclopedia, with which he was associated since 1958...

An obituary of Zentralblatt by Weiske, which gives its history and statistical data about its abstracts and indexes, was published in the April 1973 issue of Chem. Ber. (pp. I-XVI). 

The prominent role played by Japanese investigators in carbohydrate science is underscored by the two substantial chapters by Japanese authors in the current volume. This volume also pays tribute to one of the greatest Japanese carbohydrate scientists, Hamao Umezawa, in the obituary article contributed by Tsuchiya, Maeda, and Horton. Hamao Umezawa dedicated his entire, extraordinarily productive career to the development of antibiotics his innovative contributions are exemplified by his chapter in Volume 30 of this series on the biochemical mechanism of inactivation of aminoglycoside antibiotics.
