Numerical integration to reference macrostates

This survey (Section IV) extends from the standard technique of long-standing, numerical integration to reference macrostates, to one only recently introduced, in which the core problem is solved by a MC leap directly between the phases of interest. 

We shall refer to this strategy as numerical integration to reference macrostates (NIRM). It is helpful to assess its strengths and weaknesses armed with an explicit example.
