Cylindrical cryptands have been receiving increasing interest recently as multidentate ligands with novel topological properties and also as potential chelates for two metal atoms (80PAC2441). 

Because of their novel topologies, polyrotaxanes have properties different from those of conventional polymers. Solubility, intrinsic viscosity, melt viscosity, glass transition, melting temperature and phase behavior can be altered by the formation of polyrotaxanes. The detailed changes are related both to the properties of the threaded cyclics and to the backbone and the threading efficiency.

Hydrogen-bonded dimers of tetra-urea calix[4]arenes offer a unique, unprecedented preorganization [28], Before we describe how this can be used for the rational construction of molecules with novel topologies, it is reasonable to discuss the properties of such dimeric capsules and the conditions under which they exist. 

While these examples again demonstrate the unlimited possibilities for the chemical modification of calixarenes [81], the preorganization obtained by the dimerization of tetra-urea derivatives opens the door to the construction of molecules or molecular assemblies with entirely novel topologies. 

A novel topological strategy has been examined for designing amorphous molecular solids suitable for optoelectronic applications. In this approach, chromophores were attached to a tetrahedral point of convergence. For instance, stilbenoid units were covalently linked to a tetraphenylmethane core by means of a palladium-catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction [143]. The optical properties of these compounds were examined. 

Diblock, triblock, and multiblock copolymers are typically prepared by sequential monomer addition to polymerization systems in which the chain-breaking reactions are sufficiently suppressed. Polymer properties can thereby be varied by manipulating the constituent blocks compatibilities, hydrophilicities/hydrophobicities, and hardness/softness. New and/ or novel topologies can also be prepared by controlled processes, including cyclic polymers and/or copolymers, comb-like macromolecules, and star polymers. The synthetic range of cationic vinyl polymerizations will be discussed in detail in Chapter 5. 

Early in the development of the process, we determined that silicalite, a MFl structure type adsorbent, is suitable for the process. Silicalite is crystalline silica, which has a novel topologic type of tetrahedral framework similar to aluminosilicate molecular sieves.

In the case of SAPO-11 materials, silicon was observed to incorporate the AEL framework with some difficulty, in order to induce medium strength acidity by substitution for P. It could also correspond to specific A1 environments, i.e., not all the A1 atoms are tetracoordinated, but some have six neighbors or even five. Such a concept may broaden the field of AlPO-type materials which exhibit novel topologies.
