Histamine decarboxylase knockout mice are unable to produce histamine and these animals are unable to maintain wakefulness in a novel environment. Systemic or intraventricular administration of histamine or Hi receptor agonists induces wakefulness whereas systemic or intraventricular administration of Hi receptor antagonists induces sleep.
