Notification of public and regulatory officials

Notifying tlic public of an emergency is a task tliat must be accomplished with caution. People will react in difTcrent ways. Many will simply not know what to do, some will not take tlie warning seriously, and others will panic. Proper training in each community, as discussed in Section 3.6, can help minimize panic and condition the public to make the right response in a time of stress. 

Methods of communicating the emergency will differ from community to coininunit) , depending on size and resources. Some tccluiiques for notifying tlie public are  

The sounding of fire department alarms in different ways to indicate emergencies of certain kinds 

Chain phone calls (this method usually works well in small towns) 

Announcements made tluough loudspeakers from police cars or tlie vehicles of volunteer teams
