Notch development

Coasts undergoing erosion display two basic elements of the coastal profile, namely, the cliff and the bench or platform. In any theoretical consideration of the evolution of a coastal profile, it is assumed that the coast is newly uplifted above sea level. After some time, a wave-cut notch may be excavated, and its formation intensifies marine erosion in this narrow zone. The development of a notch varies according to the nature of the rock in which excavation is proceeding, for example, it may be present if the sediments are unconsolidated or if the bedding planes dip seawards. Where a notch develops, it gives rise to a bench, and the material above is undermined and collapses to form a cliff face. 

Bioerosion by endoUthic organisms and surface feeders grazing upon epi- and endolithic algae are generally acknowledged to play an important role in tidal-notch development. 

Development of toughened acetals has recendy dourished. One such grade, Delrin lOOST, boasts a notched-impact strength of 900 J/m (16.86 ft-lb/in.) at 23°C, substantially higher than that of nonmodified, general purpose grades (Table 2). 

The literature contains many references to the use of notched, as opposed to pre-cracked or plain, specimens in laboratory studies of stress corrosion, for reasons of improved reproducibility, inability to crack plain specimens under otherwise identical conditions or ease of measuring some parameter such as crack growth rate when the crack location is predetermined. However, the developments in fracture mechanics (see Section 8.9), have resulted in a whole new field of stress-corrosion testing involving the use of specimens...
