Christine S. Grant, North Carolina State University I said that I wasn t going to say anything, but if you look around the room you will find that I am the only African-American person here, and so I wanted to put another statistic in your basket. [Pg.23]

Bazooka The United States mihtary first uses the bazooka during the North African campaign in World War II. [Pg.2061]

Chemical supply experience in the North African and Mediterranean Theaters of Operations passed through several phases, each illustrative of a development in both the theater supply system and the chemical supply system. The terms theater supply system and chemical supply system are employed advisedly, because the theater system and each technical service system tended to develop independently although both were dependent to a considerable degree upon the War Department system. But that War Department system was only eight months old at the time of the landings in North Africa, and, as it was never able completely to overcome the traditional autonomy of the technical services in the United States, so was it even less able to exert its influence bn the theater technical services through the intermediary of the theater organization. [Pg.94]

M47 loo-pound bomb with an incendiary filling was satisfactory, but it was late in 1942 before a successful filling could be produced in quantity. Quantity production of toxics was just beginning, and not even token shipments to the European theater were authorized until January 1943. Defensive equipment and service supplies were no more available to the air forces than they were to the ground and service forces, and all stockages in and destined for the European theater were subject to the demands of the North African campaigns. Existing demands on the British supply system had reached monumental proportions, but the British were in a position to be of some assistance to the chemical preparedness of the United States forces. [Pg.151]

Until the 2011 independence referendum. South Sudan had been a part of the larger state of Sudan. The Sudanese borders were drawn in 1884, in the wake of the Berlin Conference, at which European powers divided the African continent among themselves. Sudan thus became apart of the British colonial empire. Sudan s borders, like those of many other African states, were drawn randomly, by European leaders who cared little about the ethnicity, culture, religion, or language of the inhabitants of such newly created states. As a consequence, in Sudan, the newly created borders encompassed predominantly Arab descendants of colonizers in the North, and different ethnic groups of black Africans in the South. The British colonial rule emphasized the... [Pg.161]

The first British settlement in North America was established in 1607 and named Jamestown, after King James i. The little tobacco-growing colony was located on the East Coast, in the region that would eventually become the state of Virginia. One of the constant debates among the Jamestown settlers was whether they should expand the colony. Tobacco growing was a very profitable enterprise, especially since labor was so cheap — the Jamestown settlers had brought the first African slaves to North America. But the settlement was surrounded by unfriendly Indians who would, of course, resist the expansion. [Pg.61]

Blastomyces dermatitidis is highly endemic in river banks of most eastern states of North America, and there are worldwide reports of this infection including Africa, India and Europe, where its rare appearance is most probably related to contact with fomites. Skin lesions are a very common sign of chronic disease and appear as either pustules developing to ulcers or papules growing to verrucous lesions over months. African blastomycosis is characterized by bone infection and draining sinuses, traumatic implantation presenting as a chancroid-like lesion. Treatment amphotericin B is used for severe acute disease, otherwise ketoconazole, fluconazole or itraconazole have been effective. [Pg.153]
