Nonobservable states

Note that the observable operator (the operator representing coherence or net magnetization in the x-y plane) is always written first in the product. Also, we see above some examples where both operators are in the x-y plane, or both operators are on the z axis These products represent nonobservable states which are nonetheless very important in NMR experiments. The only observable product operators are those with only one operator in the x-y plane ( single-quantum transitions ). [Pg.252]

Equations (5.2)—(5.4) and Figs. 5.1-5.3 illustrate the nature of the structural observables obtained from gas-electron diffraction the intensity data provide intemuclear distances which are weighted averages of the expectation values of the individual vibrational molecular states. This presentation clearly illustrates that the temperature-dependent observable distribution averages are conceptually quite different from the singular, nonobservable and temperature independent equilibrium distances, usually denoted r -type distances, obtained from ab initio geometry optimizations. [Pg.137]

Any (state-specific) science may be considered as consisting of two parts observations and theories. The observations are what can be experienced relatively directly the theories are the inferences about what nonobservable factors account for the observations. For example, the phenomenon of synesthesia (seeing colors as a result of hearing sounds) is a theoretical proposition for me in my ordinary d-SoC I do not experience it and can only generate theories about what other people report about it. if I were under the influence of psychedelic drug such as LSD or marijuana 105, I could probably experience synesthesia directly, and my descriptions of the experience would become data. [Pg.210]

Additional evidence for a concerted reaction of two metalloformyl radical units Rh—CO comes from studies of reactions with ethanol, resulting in predominant formation of the formyl-ethoxy ester. Reaction of ethanol with Rh—CO units from two separate molecules would yield the nonobserved symmetrical products [(H(0)C)Rh (por)-tether-(por)Rh (C(0)H)] and [(OEt(0)C)Rh (por)-tether-(por)Rh -(C(0)OEt)]. In addition, nonconcerted reaction of ethanol with a monocarbonyl complex [Rh (por)-tether-(por)Rh (CO)] would yield nonobserved species containing Rh—H units. Taken together, it seems most likely that the formation of Rh C(0)H and Rh —C(0)Y units proceeds a concerted cleavage of the H Y bonds via a trimolecular transition state, as shown in Fig. 44. [Pg.308]

The observation or nonobservation of a recovery signal depends on several factors. First, collisional neutralization of ions may produce neutrals in their dissociative state(s). Electron transfer between the ion and the target is considered as a vertical Franck-Condon process. If the geometry of the ion is close to that of the neutral, the latter has a good chance of being formed as a stable species. When the geometry of the ion and the neutral are significantly different then the neutral is likely to be unstable. [Pg.383]
