Nitrogen valence level

Fig. 6. Schematic partial density of states scheme for an NaCl-type (binary) compound (with UN as an example) with f electrons delocalized and unhybridized. Uranium is on the left and nitrogen on the right. In ascending order nitrogen valence band f-band tied to the Fermi level the d conduction band. The Fermi level is at zero on the energy scale. The unhybridized band centres, Qi, are shown on the right. This unhybridized model corresponds to the fully ionic model... Fig. 6. At this point it is useful to introduce the concept of valence electrons—that is, the electrons in the outermost (highest) principal energy level of an atom. For example, nitrogen, which has the electron configuration ls 2s 2p, has electrons in principal levels 1 and 2. Therefore, level 2 (which has 2s and 2p sublevels) is the valence level of nitrogen, and the 2s and 2p electrons are the valence electrons. For the sodium atom (electron configuration ls 2s 2p 3s or [Ne]3s ) the valence electron is the electron in the... [Pg.297]

Sihcon carbide can be doped using boron [7440-42-8] to provide acceptor levels within the band gap (0.3 eV above the valence band), thus making it a -type conductor, or nitrogen can be added to provide donor levels and n-ty e conduction (0.07 eV) below the conduction band. [Pg.358]

Here f is the fractional occupation of the unhybridized f band. At the top of the valence band, tied to the Fermi level, is an f-band containing a small d and p admixture. The total number of f-electrons has changed from 2 to approximately 2.5 and the number of nitrogen p electrons in the valence band is reduced from 6 to about 3. [Pg.287]

Nitrogen. Nitrogen ions (N+ with energy of 130 KeV) were implanted into CdS deposited from a triethanolamine/ammonia bath [20]. The resistivity of the as-deposited films was ca. 10 O-cm and dropped, depending on ion dose, up to seven orders of magnitude for an ion dose of 10 ion/cm. Even more notable, the conductivity type changed from n-type (the normal type for CdS) to p-type, as measured by hot probe. An acceptor level, 0.6 eV above the valence band, was introduced by the ion implantation. [Pg.160]

Now that we ve looked at bonding in the H2 molecule, let s move up a level in complexity by looking at the bonding in several second-row diatomic molecules— N2,02, and F2. The valence bond model developed in Section 7.10 predicts that the nitrogen atoms in N2 are triply bonded and have one lone pair each, that the oxygen atoms in 02 are doubly bonded and have two lone pairs each, and that the fluorine atoms in F2 are singly bonded and have three lone pairs each ... [Pg.281]
