Striking confirmation of the conclusion that the BET area derived from a Type IV isotherm is indeed equal to the specific surface is afforded by a recent study of a mesoporous silica, Gasil I, undertaken by Havard and Wilson. This material, having been extensively characterized, had already been adopted as a standard adsorbent for surface area determination (cf. Section 2.12). The nitrogen isotherm was of Type IV with a well defined hysteresis loop, which closed at a point below saturation (cf. F, in Fig. 3.1). The BET area calculated from it was 290 5 0 9 m g , in excellent agreement with the value 291 m g obtained from the slope of the initial region of the plot (based on silica TK800 as reference cf. p. 93). [Pg.168]

Three generations of latices as characterized by the type of surfactant used in manufacture have been defined (53). The first generation includes latices made with conventional (/) anionic surfactants like fatty acid soaps, alkyl carboxylates, alkyl sulfates, and alkyl sulfonates (54) (2) nonionic surfactants like poly(ethylene oxide) or poly(vinyl alcohol) used to improve freeze—thaw and shear stabiUty and (J) cationic surfactants like amines, nitriles, and other nitrogen bases, rarely used because of incompatibiUty problems. Portiand cement latex modifiers are one example where cationic surfactants are used. Anionic surfactants yield smaller particles than nonionic surfactants (55). Often a combination of anionic surfactants or anionic and nonionic surfactants are used to provide improved stabiUty. The stabilizing abiUty of anionic fatty acid soaps diminishes at lower pH as the soaps revert to their acids. First-generation latices also suffer from the presence of soap on the polymer particles at the end of the polymerization. Steam and vacuum stripping methods are often used to remove the soap and unreacted monomer from the final product (56). [Pg.25]

The third class of compounds to be discussed in this chapter are those in which an RE group (E = S, Se, Te) is attached to a nitrogen centre. This category includes amines of the type (REfsN and the related radicals [(RE)2N] , as well as organochalcogen(ir) azides, REN3, and nitrenes REN (E = S, Se). Covalent azides of the type RTe(N3)3 and R2Te(N3)2, in which the chalcogen is in the +4 oxidation state, have also been characterized. [Pg.181]

Imidazole is characterized mainly by the T) (N) coordination mode, where N is the nitrogen atom of the pyridine type. The rare coordination modes are T) - (jt-) realized in the ruthenium complexes, I-ti (C,N)- in organoruthenium and organoosmium chemistry. Imidazolium salts and stable 1,3-disubsti-tuted imidazol-2-ylidenes give a vast group of mono-, bis-, and tris-carbene complexes characterized by stability and prominent catalytic activity. Benzimidazole follows the same trends. Biimidazoles and bibenzimidazoles are ligands as the neutral molecules, mono- and dianions. A variety of the coordination situations is, therefore, broad, but there are practically no deviations from the expected classical trends for the mono-, di-, and polynuclear A -complexes. [Pg.167]

Zinc dithiocarbamates have been used for many years as antioxidants/antiabrasives in motor oils and as vulcanization accelerators in rubber. The crystal structure of bis[A, A-di- -propyldithio-carbamato]zinc shows identical coordination of the two zinc atoms by five sulfur donors in a trigonal-bipyramidal environment with a zinc-zinc distance of 3.786 A.5 5 The electrochemistry of a range of dialkylthiocarbamate zinc complexes was studied at platinum and mercury electrodes. An exchange reaction was observed with mercury of the electrode.556 Different structural types have been identified by variation of the nitrogen donor in the pyridine and N,N,N, N -tetra-methylenediamine adducts of bis[7V,7V-di- .vo-propyldithiocarbamato]zinc. The pyridine shows a 1 1 complex and the TMEDA gives an unusual bridging coordination mode.557 The anionic complexes of zinc tris( V, V-dialkyldithiocarbamates) can be synthesized and have been spectroscopically characterized.558... [Pg.1196]
