Nitrogen removal from organic compounds

Low-valent nitrogen and phosphorus compounds are used to remove hetero atoms from organic compounds. Important examples are the Wolff-Kishner type reduction of ketones to hydrocarbons (R.L. Augustine, 1968 D. Todd, 1948 R.O. Hutchins, 1973B) and Barton s olefin synthesis (p. 35) both using hydrazine derivatives. 

Kryoclean A process for removing volatile organic compounds from effluent gas streams by low-temperature condensation. The refrigerant is liquid nitrogen, used subsequently in various ways. Developed by BOC in the 1990s. A simplified version of the process was announced in 1997. 

Glutamate, glutamine, and aspartate also play central roles in removal of nitrogen from organic compounds. Transamination is reversible and is often the first step in catabolism of excess amino acids.

Liquid nitrogen is used in cold traps to remove and recover solvents or volatile organic compounds from gas streams to reduce atmospheric emissions. Liquid nitrogen can be used to accelerate the cooldown time for process reactors (29).
