Nitrogen Oxides and Related Compounds

The nitrogen trioxide molecule has never been isolated, but it has been generated in the gas phase and is sufficiently stable for the structure to be determined. The molecule is trigmial planar. The mean bond energy is 59 kJ mol lower than the [Pg.63]

At low temperature, both nitrogen monoxide and nitrogen dioxide form crystalline NN bonded dimers. A mixed dimer, N2O3, has also been prepared. Evaporation yield mixtures of associated and unassociated species, and the structures of both monomers and dimers have determined by spectroscopic techniques. [Pg.64]

The bond distances and valence angles in the gaseous nitric acid molecule are clearly similar to those in the anhydride N2O5, and the enthalpy of atomization calculated from the reference bond energies in Fig. 22 plus the mean OH bond energy in H2O reproduces the thermochemical value to within 2.8%. The best [Pg.64]

Lewis structure is analogous to that of the anhydride, and the number of electron pairs around N is again five. [Pg.65]

The bond distance in the trigonal planar nitrate ion is equal to the bond distance in NO3 and slightly longer than the N=0 double bonds in N2O5 or HNO3. [Pg.65]

Much has already been published on the irradiation of pyridine N-oxides and related compounds consistent with many observations, 6-cyanophenanthridine IV-oxide (60) was shown some years ago to give good yields of (61) on irradiation in acetone or benzene solution. In the presence of 2,3-dimethylbut-2-ene, however, irradiation of (60) produces a very different type of reaction for which there is no precedent. Thus (62) is formed in 35% yield via a process which involves cleavage of the heterocyclic ring, shift of the oxygen atom from nitrogen to the neighbouring carbon, and addition of the ethylene. [Pg.319]

For the past three decades, active research has been carried out on N-nitroso compounds (NOC) and related compounds. The impact of NOC and nitrogen oxides regarding their effect on human health and safety aspects is well documented in the literature61-63. Exposure to nitrogenous chemicals, pollutants and their precursors is mainly via ingestion however, in some cases inhalation is the major route of exposure. [Pg.1182]

P and C n.m.r. spectroscopy have been used to study the structure of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and related compounds in their reduced and oxidized forms. It was concluded that there is an electrostatic interaction between the phosphoryl oxygen in the diphosphate backbone and the quaternary nitrogen of the pyridine ring. ... [Pg.256]

The interaction between nitrogen oxides and the naturally emitted isoprene (and structurally related compounds) in the night-time troposphere. [Pg.308]
