Nitrogen dioxide dinitrogen tetroxide from

Dinitrogen tetroxide (nitrogen dioxide) is available from the Matheson Company, Inc, East Rutherford, New Jersey. [Pg.46]

The Ponzio reaction provides a useful route to gem-dinitro compounds and involves treating oximes with a solution of nitrogen dioxide or its dimer in diethyl ether or a chlorinated solvent. The Ponzio reaction works best for aromatic oximes where the synthesis of many substituted aryldinitromethanes have been reported. Compound (56), an isomer of TNT, is formed from the reaction of dinitrogen tetroxide with the oxime of benzaldehyde (55) followed by mononitration of the aromatic ring with mixed acid. Yields are usually much lower for aliphatic aldoximes and ketoximes. " The parent carbonyl compound of the oxime is usually the major by-product in these reactions. [Pg.16]

Dinitrogen Tetroxide.—The dimer of nitrogen dioxide is not very stable its enthalpy of formation from the monomer is 13.873 kcal/mole. The molecule is found in both the crystal (x-ray diffraction)29 and the gas (electron diffraction)80 to be planar, with orthorhombic symmetry. The N—N bond length reported for the crystal is 1.64 A. The value for the gas molecule, 1.75 A, is probably somewhat more accurate.81 This value is 0.28 A greater than the single-bond value found for hydrazine the bond number of the bond is accordingly about 0.34 (Equation 7-7). [Pg.349]

The great rate at which a chemical reaction may occur has been mentioned above in the discussion of the NOg-NgO equilibrium. It was pointed out that the decomposition of dinitrogen tetroxide or reformation of these molecules from nitrogen dioxide molecules occurs within... [Pg.407]

Scribner found primary fluoro alcohols of types (1) to be unaffected by dinitrogen tetroxide but that they can be oxidized in good yield by nitrogen dioxide (NOj), generated by passing nitric oxide and air through a Pyrex tube packed with quartz chips and heated at 400°. The products from primary fluoro alcohols (I) are aldehyde hydrates or aldehydrols (2). The secondary fluoro alcohol (3) afforded the fluoro... [Pg.166]

The equilibrium between dinitrogen tetroxide (colorless) and nitrogen dioxide (brown color) gases favor the formation of the latter as temperature increases (from bottom to top). The models show dinitrogen tetroxide and nitrogen dioxide molecules. [Pg.614]

Recall from Chapter 4 that the double arrow means that the reaction is reversible.) The study of physical equilibrium yields useful information, such as the equilibrium vapor pressure (see Section 12.6). However, chemists are particularly interested in chemical equilibrium processes, such as the reversible reaction involving nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and dinitrogen tetroxide (N2O4). The progress of the reaction... [Pg.497]

Let s look at a few other examples. Earlier we considered the cooling of a cup of coffee. Heat moves from the hot coffee to its surroundings. Molecular motion becomes more disordered, in the sense that it is dispersed over a larger volume. Similarly, when a gas flows from a flask into a connected evacuated flask, molecules become more disordered in the sense that they are strewn over a larger volume. When ice melts, water molecules leave an ordered crystal and enter a more disordered liquid state. As a final example, consider the chemical reaction in which dinitrogen tetroxide, N2O4, dissociates into two nitrogen dioxide molecules, NO2 ... [Pg.772]

The nitric oxide which is formed reacts with oxygen to form nitrogen dioxide. Nitrogen dioxide exists in equilibrium with its dimer, dinitrogen tetroxide. The nitrogen dioxide/dimer mixture is sent to a column, sometimes called an absorption tower. Water is added at the top of the column. The nitrogen dioxide is converted to nitric acid. Byproduct nitric oxide is oxidized to nitrogen dioxide by means of a stream of air passed into the absorption column. The aqueous nitric acid is removed continuously from the base of the column. Overall, the reaction can be written as ... [Pg.29]

Tests and experience have shown that nitrogen dioxide NO2 and dinitrogen tetroxide N2O4, whether liquid or gaseous, have no action on aluminium from low temperatures (— 100 °C) up to relatively high temperatures and pressures (200 °C and 20 bar) [5]. [Pg.362]
