Preparation of 2-Nitro-4,4 -Dicyanostilbene 10 grams of 2-nitro-p-tolunitrile and 8.1 grams of 4-cyano-benzaldehyde were heated to 170° to 180°C, 1.2 and 0.6 cc of piperidine were added at quarter-hour intervals, heating was continued ifor a further one and a quarter hours, the product cooled, triturated with glacial acetic acid and filtered. The residue was crystallized from glacial acetic acid as yellow needles, MP 290°C. 

Aq. KOH added dropise to an ice-cooled soln. of a,a,a-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-p-tolunitrile and methyl thioglycolate in dimethylformamide, and stirred 5 min. in the cold methyl 3-amino-4-nitro-6-trifiuoromethylbenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylate. Y 80%. - Nucleophilic displacement of ar. nitro groups is almost as easy as that of ar. fluorine groups and easier than that of ar. chlorine groups. F. e. s. J. R. Beck, J. Org.
