Nitro anthrone

Baughman (1992) measured the disappearance rate constants for a number of solvent and disperse azo, anthraquinone, and quinoline dyes in anaerobic sediments. The half-lives ranged from 0.1 to 140 days. Product studies of the azo dyes showed that reduction of the azo linkages and nitro groups resulted in the formation of substituted anilines. The 1,4-diaminoanthraquinone dyes underwent complex reactions thought to involve reduction and replacement of amino with hydroxy groups. Demethylation of methoxyanthraquinone dyes and reduction of anthraquinone dyes to anthrones also was observed. 

In place of active methylene compounds having a nitrile group, malonates, 13-ketoesters, 1,3-diketones, 1,1-disulfones, nitro compounds, Mel drum acid, and anthrone can also be used as the Michael donors for these ruthenium-catalyzed aldol and Michael reactions. The reaction proceeds well in acetonitrile under mild and neutral conditions (Eq. 9.59) [83]. 

Oxidative dimerization of anthrone and its derivatives can be effected by oxygen,286 aromatic nitro compounds,287 diazomethane,288 or oxygen in the presence of palladium.289 The following procedure is for the use of nitrobenzene 287...
