Nitrilium salts amidine synthesis

A suspension of FeClg in acetonitrile and excess isopropyl chloride kept 3 hrs. at 0°, excess isopropyl chloride evaporated, the resulting nitrilium salt suspended in methylene chloride, piperidine in methylene chloride added drop wise, kept 2 hrs. at room temp., the solvent evaporated, the remaining salt treated with water then at 0° with 30%-NaOH product. Y 78%. - The mild reaction conditions make this method particularly useful for the synthesis of thermally sensitive amidines. F. e. s. R. Fuks, Tetrahedron 29, 2147 (1973). [Pg.119]
