Nitriles, unsaturated conjugated

The addition of active methylene compounds (ethyl malonate, ethyl aoeto-acetate, ethyl plienylacetate, nltromethane, acrylonitrile, etc.) to the aP-double bond of a conjugated unsaturated ketone, ester or nitrile In the presence of a basic catalyst (sodium ethoxide, piperidine, diethylamiiie, etc.) is known as the Michael reaction or Michael addition. The reaction may be illustrated by the addition of ethyl malonate to ethyl fumarate in the presence of sodium ethoxide hydrolysis and decarboxylation of the addendum (ethyl propane-1 1 2 3-tetracarboxylate) yields trlcarballylic acid ... [Pg.912]

Enamines react with acceptor-substituted alkenes (Michael acceptors) in a conjugate addition reaction for example with o ,/3-unsaturated carbonyl compounds or nitriles such as acrylonitrile 8. With respect to the acceptor-substituted alkene the reaction is similar to a Michael addition ... [Pg.268]

Formal oxidation of pyrrolidine to the succinimide stage affords a series of compounds used as anticonvulsant agents for treatment of seizures in petit mal epilepsy. Knoevnagel condensation of benzaldehyde with ethyl cyanoacetate affords the unsaturated ester, 9. Conjugate addition of cyanide ion leads to the di-nitrile ester (10). Hydrolysis in mineral acid affords the succinic acid (11), presumably by decarboxylation of the intermediate tricarboxyllie acid. Lactamization with methylamine gives phensuximide (12). ... [Pg.226]

The Michael reaction occurs with a variety of a,/3-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, not just conjugated ketones. Unsaturated aldehydes, esters, thio-esters, nitriles, amides, and nitro compounds can all act as the electrophilic acceptor component in Michael reactions (Table 23.1). Similarly, a variety of different donors can be used, including /3-diketones, /3-keto esters, malonic esters, /3-keto nitriles, and nitro compounds. [Pg.894]

The reaction of conjugated nitroalkenes with oc,P-unsaturated esters, ketones, nitriles, and sulfones is catalyzed by TMG to give the Michael adduct of allylic nitro compounds (Eq. 4.108).142... [Pg.104]

Nickel-bpy and nickel-pyridine catalytic systems have been applied to numerous electroreductive reactions,202 such as synthesis of ketones by heterocoupling of acyl and benzyl halides,210,213 addition of aryl bromides to activated alkenes,212,214 synthesis of conjugated dienes, unsaturated esters, ketones, and nitriles by homo- and cross-coupling involving alkenyl halides,215 reductive polymerization of aromatic and heteroaromatic dibromides,216-221 or cleavage of the C-0 bond in allyl ethers.222... [Pg.486]

Cycloaddition with nitrile oxides occur with compounds of practically any type with a C=C bond alkenes and cycloalkenes, their functional derivatives, dienes and trienes with isolated, conjugated or cumulated double bonds, some aromatic compounds, unsaturated and aromatic heterocycles, and fullerenes. The content of this subsection is classified according to the mentioned types of dipolarophiles. Problems of relative reactivities of dienophiles and dipoles, regio- and stereoselectivity of nitrile oxide cycloadditions were considered in detail by Jaeger and... [Pg.21]

Unsaturated nitriles have been obtained from the SN. reaction of 3-chloroalk-1 -enes [22] using tetra-n-butylammonium iodide as the catalyst. Under the basic reaction conditions, isomerism occurs such that not only is the 1-cyanoalk-2-ene obtained, but also the conjugated 1-cyanoalk-l-ene. Surprisingly, when tetra-n-butylammonium chloride is used, direct SN displacement of the chloro group occurs, followed by isomerization, to give the 3-cyanoalk-2-ene. [Pg.231]
