Nicotine-like action

Cytisine. This base belongs to the same pharmacological group as nicotine.It is a powerful poison causing nausea, convulsions and death by failure of respiration. The nicotine-like action is shared by A -methyl-cytisine but the latter, according to Scott and Chen, who have made a detailed study of its action, is weaker and has about one-fortieth the toxicity of nicotine.

Rietschel (134, 135) found that the pressor effect is not of central origin and that hordenine stimulates the heart muscle. Although much less active than adrenaline, it is analogous in its action, resembling ephedrine rather than adrenaline. According to Raymond-Hamet (136-138) and Luduefia (139), hordenine displays a nicotine-like action. 

The hydrochloride of 6,7-dimethyl-3-benzoyloxyquinuclidine [compound (LXV)] at doses of 2-5 mg/kg caused moderate (i.e. 20-40 mm), but prolonged fall of blood pressure in anaesthetized cats. At the same doses it diminished the vasopressor (nicotine-like) action of acetylcholine in atropinized cats and reduced the responses of blood pressure, respiration and the nictitating membrane to i.v. administration of cytizine.
