Thorium A quickly decays into thorium B, another rather short-lived product, which spontaneously disintegrates, as shown by Rutherford, into thorium C (53). By heating a lead-encased platinum wire charged with the mixture to 700°, Miss J. M. W. Slater, Bathurst student at Newnham College, Cambridge, succeeded in volatizing the thorium B° from the platinum and condensing it on the cold lead cylinder. At 1000° almost pure thorium C remained on the wire (32).
