New Forest Damages in Central Europe Development, Causes and Policies

Beginning of the 1980 s the public in Central Europe first perceived that forests in wide areas had been damaged severely and seemed to die rapidly. The term of the Waldsterben (forest die-hack) has been created. [Pg.215]

In the following the development of new forest damages, present extent, the causes, the measurement methods of the damages and the policies defending the damages will be outlined and discussed. Peoples special attitude to forests as well as a quite similar political treatment of the forest damage problem in Austria, the Federal Republic of Germany and Switzerland justifies comprehensive treatise under the term Central Europe . [Pg.215]

This investigation concentrates on three countries Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), Austria (A), Switzerland (CH). For simplicity, they are together referred to as Central Europe. This geographical distinction of forest decline is not exclusive it was chosen however, based upon  [Pg.215]

Through a detailed analysis of the phenomenon of forest decline, it is evident that its spatial occurence and extent is quite variable. One must recognize that these differences are often reduced to the size of single stands. [Pg.215]
