Neutrophils interaction with alveolar macrophages

The interaction of neutrophils with leukoattractants and especially opsonized particles is accompanied by degranulation with the consequent release of lysosomal enzymes and an oxidative burst. A consequence of the respiratory burst is the virtually immediate generation of superoxide anion (Babior, 1984) by the neutrophils and alveolar macrophages. Other oxygen species can also be released by these cells (Hoidal et al., 1979).
