Earlier studies on microalgae took place during 1978-1996 with projects funded by the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL). The major conclusion of the study in a closeout report by NREL in 1998 showed that algae oil-derived biodiesel is, even with all the improvements, at least two times higher in cost than crude oil-derived diesel. Other results of the NREL report (Ref. 91, pp. 28-31) indicate that some species contain substantial amounts of unusual components not found in other plants such as C13-0, C14-1, C15-0, C16-1, and even some with methyl-branched fatty acid content in concentrations of 3-5% to as much as 15-20%. [Pg.135]
