Educating the Patient and Family If lypressin or desmopressin is to be used in the form of a nasal spray or is to be instilled intranasally usingthe nasal tube delivery system, the nurse demonstrates the technique of instillation (see Fhtient and Family Teaching Checklist Self-Adnrinistering Nasal Vasopressin). The nurse includes illustrated patient instructions with the drug and reviews them with the patient. If possible, the nurse lias the patient demonstrate the technique of administration. The nurse should discuss the need to take the drug only as directed by the primary health care provider. The patient should not increase the dosage (ie, the number or frequency of sprays) unless advised to do so by the primary health care provider. [Pg.521]

Solid dosage forms based on mucoadhesive polymers are used mainly for buccal delivery of drugs, whereas micro- or nanoparticulate formulations are preferred for the delivery of therapeutics in the nasal and intestinal tract [5]. [Pg.171]

Nasal administration. Apart from parenteral administration, controlled release dosage forms based upon the microsphere concept should have application to other routes of administration. Microspheres in the form of pellets have been used to deliver drugs to the gastrointestinal tract and other examples include the administration of microspheres to the eye and topically to the lungs. In recent studies Ilium (20) has employed microspheres as possible controlled release formulations for nasal application. Such studies have relevance to the delivery of novel macromolecular compounds such as peptides and proteins. [Pg.209]

Carbopol resins also have been used in controlled-release dosage forms. Especially, the resins Noven AA-1 USP and Carbopol 934P NF are being extensively developed in bioadhesive drug delivery systems for topical, bucal or nasal, ocular, and rectal applications (e.g., Fentanyl ). Noven CA-1 USP and CA-2 USP are used as oral laxative and antidiarrheal products in swallowable and chewable tablets. [Pg.464]
