8-Naphthylmercuric chloride

Mercury di-/3-naphthyl has been prepared by the action of sodium amalgam on /3-bromonaphthalene,1 and by the action of alcoholic sodium iodide on /9-naphthylmercuric chloride.2... 

In a 2-1. round-bottom Pyrex flask equipped with a stirrer are placed 139 g. (0.3 mole) of the addition compound, 700 cc. of acetone (b.p. 55—57 °) (Note 3), and 38 g. (0.6 mole) of copper powder (Note 4). The mixture is cooled at once to about 20°, stirred for one hour, and then allowed to stand overnight. The insoluble material is collected on a Buchner funnel (Note 5). The solid mixture is extracted with about 3 1. of boiling commercial xylene and filtered through a hot funnel. On cooling the filtrate, crystals of /3-naphthylmercuric chloride separate (Note 5). The yield of product which melts at 266-267° is 52-64 g. (38-49 per cent of the theoretical amount based on the amine used).

The product of this reaction is never pure white. The treatment of /S-naphthylmercuric chloride (p. 55) with sodium iodide, similar to the preparation of mercury di- -tolyl (Org. 

The nitrate is prepared by the interaction of silver nitrate and a-naphthylmercuric chloride in alcoholic solution, or from mercury di-a-naphthyl and nitrogen trioxide. It crystallises in small white needles. 

Organomercurials. Nesmajanow prepared /3-naphthylmercuric chloride by diazotizing 3-naphthylamine hydrochloride and adding to the solution a solution of I mole of mercuric chloride in coned, hydrochloric acid to precipitate a yellow complex salt. The complex was collected, washed with water and with acetone, air dried (explosive), and a suspension of the complex and copper powder in acetone...
