In highly aligned nanofiber substrate, neurite outgrowth can be as much as 20% longer than that on random fibers although the presence of misaligned fiber has been shown to impede the extension [29,30].

Several techniques for obtaining highly aligned nanofibers have been described in the literature, but not all of them are readily amenable to scale-up.
