When a pair of anion- and cation-exchange membranes is placed between the electrodes as shown in Figure 8.1c, the solution between the membranes becomes depleted of NaCI. This depletion occurs because the membranes are selectively permeable to ions of a specific charge. The anion-exchange membrane allows Cl ions to be carried out of the center compartment by the electric potential, but it does not allow Na+ ions to enter. Similarly the cation-exchange membrane offers a low resistance to Na ions and a high resistance to Cl ions. [Pg.483]
