Trolox (Rasnik et al., 2006) is an exceptionally good one, but other compounds, such as /3-mercaptoethanol, n-propyl gallate, ascorbic acid, or chloramphenicol, have been used (Widengren et al., 2007).

The commonest synthetic antioxidants are butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Other synthetic antioxidants are n-propyl gallate and n-octyl gallate.

In 2001, Sciuto and Morgan reported that dietary treatment with n -propyl gallate (nPG) but not with vitamin E, conferred increased resistance to phosgene in a mouse model. Lung GSH levels were increased by the pre-treatment. Again, paradoxical results were reported the lower dose of nPG (0.75 wt% in rodent chow 5002) increased survival rate and lowered TBARS production but the higher dose (1.5 wt% in chow) did not.

We prepare a stock solution of 2.2% n-propyl gallate in 100% glycerol (mix overnight at room temperature), and then add one-tenth volume of a lOx buffer stock. 

Fluorescence antifade mounting solution, such as VectaShield (Vector). A home-made solution of 2% n-propyl gallate in glycerol may be used, but must be pH adjusted just prior to use by addition of 70 /xl 2 M Tris base (not acidified) to 930 jul glycerol-NPG.
