Pesticides multipurpose

Multipurpose pesticides. Occurrence of more than one pest-controlling property in a single allelochemical has persuaded us to propose using allelochemicals as multipurpose pesticides (IS). Such use would be beneficial in several ways ... 

A few oilier inorganic chemicals, more frequently identified as multipurpose pesticides than as insecticides, do have very strong insecticidal properties. These compounds are used sparingly, often requiring special permits in some places, and with the greatest of safety cautions observ ed. Such compounds would include calcium cyanide, carbon bisulfide, carbon tetrachloride, hydrogen cyanide, paraformaldehyde, and phosphine. 

DDT < 1,1,1,-trichloro-2,2-M.r (p-chlorophcnvljelharie), now banned in many countries, is a derivative of an asymmetrical diarylethane and an effective insecticide. Paradichlorobenzene is an effective multipurpose pesticide. The compound is useful against sugarbeet weevil and in the control of phylloxera. 

Pentachlorophenol (Penchloro, Penta, PCP, others) is a chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon used as a fungicide to preserve wood. It is not available over the counter in the United States. Formerly it had wide use as a multipurpose pesticide. It is an environmental contaminant being investigated as a hormone disrupter. 

Despite the fact, that we know the structures of more than 12000 alkaloids, only a small fraction of them has been analyzed biochemically at the molecular level. This enormous gap in our knowledge needs to be filled in the future. Since alkaloids have been preselected during evolution as multipurpose defence compounds which can closely interact with molecular targets, they are of future interest for molecular pharmacology, but also for medicine and agriculture as biorational drugs or pesticides.
