Multilayer flow modulator

Finally, there are devices that are completely different, such as the Multilayer Flow Modulator (M.F.M) from Cardiatis, that does not incorporate any fabric, or membrane at all, but relies on thrombosis of the sac due to disturbed flow through the stents. In theory, this would allow an extremely low profile, as well as the ability to cover branched portions of the aorta without concern for disrupting flow to essential organs such as the intestines or kidneys. However, while the theoretical concept has merit, the cUnical performance has yet to be demonstrated.

The concept of monolithic module design is associated with Argonne National Laboratories [111, 112]. Power density of about 8 kW/kg or 4kW/1 and fuel efficiency over 50% are expected to be achieved with monolithic SOFCs. The monolithic structure started with a co-flow version where the cell consists of a honeycomb-like array of adjacent fuel and oxidant channels that look like corrugated paperboard, as shown in Fig. 42. Multilayer laminates of the active cell components (anode-elec-ttolyte-cathode) are appropriately corrugated and stacked alternatively between flat multilayer laminates in the following sequence anode- interconnection material-cathode. In the spiral-wound system, membranes glued together at the ends and separated by spacers (that provide flow channels to the feed and permeate) are layered and wound around a central porous tube several times, thus forming a multilayered and cylindrical module. The feed mixture flows axially into the channels and the permeate flows spirally into a central porous tube and out of the system. A spiral-wound module has at least twice the packing density of a plate-and-frame module. Several spiral-wound modules can be lined up in series forming a cartridge system.
