Multifunctional dithiolenes

Multifunctional dithiolene ligands have been used to prepare binuclear as well as polymeric complexes. Some examples of this type of complex were already mentioned above (25 and 41) and involve the ligands benzenetetrathiol (51) or its alkyl ethers,78 the tetrathiosquaric acid (52), ethylenetetrathiol (53) and tetrathiooxalic acid (54) and its Se analog. The two-electron difference in oxidation state between (53) and (54) is much the same as that discussed for the parent dithiolene ligand. Crystallographic results (see Section 16.5.3.1) point out the equivalence of the latter two ligands. 

V. TOWARD MULTIFUNCTIONAL DITHIOLENE COMPLEX-BASED COMPOUNDS...

Insoluble polymers based on bidentate M-S dithiolene and M-O dioxalato ligation have been the subject of numerous studies. Although these materials are, in general, poorly characterized they have, in some cases, been shovm to exhibit promising conductive properties [100, 101]. Polymers with M-S and M-N/O ligation have also been prepared on surfaces [102, 103]. Monodentate M-N ligation has been used to prepare remarkable nanoscopic 3-D assemblies 7.54 by means of rigid, multifunctional precursors (Eq. 7.14) [104]. 

Metal dithiolene complexes represent an important class of organometaUic molecules which have been widely studied for their interesting properties such as redox activity, conductivity, and magnetism. In order to design new photo-respraisive multifunctional compounds, a series of complexes combining metalladithiolenes with azobenzene groups has been described by Nishihara et al. [36-38]. New square planar azobenzodithiolene Ni, Pd, and Pt complexes were prepared from the benzodithiolethione precursor [36, 37].
