BN nanotubes were prepared by a standard literature procedure.7 BN nanotubes were prepared by the reaction of B2C>3 with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) in the presence of ammonia at 1250 °C for 3 h. A grey spongy product was obtained after the reaction indicating the presence of unreacted MWNTs along with BN nanotubes. The product was washed with hot water to remove excess B2O3. The excess carbon present in the product was removed by oxidation at 800 C in low-pressure air (20 mPa). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (ED AX) were performed with... [Pg.578]

A significant observation in the present study is the marked increase in the E value, even with relatively small additions of the inorganic NWs. This is to be compared with the report of Zhang et al [12] who find that the elastic modulus of the PVA/PVP/SDS polymer increases from 2.5 to 4,0 GPa upon the addition of 5 wt% SWNTs. With the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), a linear increase in E with Vf of the MWNTs has been reported by Coleman et al [11]. With a 0.6 vol% addition of MWNTs, the PVA (nearly noncrystalline) modulus was reported to increase from 1.92 to... [Pg.592]

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are single slices of graphene containing several hundred or more atoms rolled into seamless cylinders, usually with a removable polyhedral cap on each end. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) are several slices... [Pg.219]

In HRTEM the carbon nanotubes appeared as long fibers, [12,90-95] (Fig. 20) with diameters ranging from about 1 to many tens of nanometers. They are hollow and clearly graphitic, as evidenced from the layered structure with an interlayer spacing close to that of bulk graphite and from diffraction studies of the individual cylindrical layers or tubules [12]. These layered nanotube structures are called multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) The tubes are closed at the end each tubule appears to close on itself and hence the entire structure resembles a Russian doll. [Pg.412]

CVD method mostly used for multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) synthesis ensures formation of vertically aligned MWNTs arrays [11]. As it was... [Pg.475]
