Multi-purpose processing facility

The Multi-Purpose Processing Facility was installed in F Canyon (reprocessing plant) at SRP for separation of Californium and trans-californium elements using newly developed, high-pressure, chromatographic cation exchange processes. 

Multi-product, multi-purpose facilities are common in the industry of today, as they offer flexibility in the manufacturing process. The downside of these kind of facilities is that they are more difficult to operate than dedicated ones, especially when it comes to the production planning. In flexible manufacturing systems, incorporating multi-purpose machines, there is seldom a single known bottleneck. Instead the bottleneck moves according to what is produced and when the production of each product has started. Many heuristics have been developed to address the problem, Abadi(1995) and Franca et al.(1996) present some methods using iterative methods.
