The selectivity issue has been related to multi-phase processing [31]. Nitrations include both organic and aqueous phases. Oxidation to phenol as one side reaction takes places in the organic phase, whereas all other reactions occur in the aqueous phase and are limited by organic solubility. For this reason, enhancing mass transfer by large specific interfaces is a key to affecting product selectivity.

As noted above, cyclic voltammetry is a powerful tool for the investigation of processes combining solution-phase reactions and heterogeneous charge transfer at the electrode surface. However, this technique can also be applied to systems with additional phase boundaries. For example, multi-phase processes in thin films covering an electrode surface (Fig. II. 1.24a), particulate solids, bacteria, or microdroplets attached to the electrode surface (Fig. II. 1.24b), or micro-emulsion systems...

As pointed out by Professor Ramshaw (Ramshaw, 2005), this development was founded on an ICI patent flled in the 1980s in which it was suggested that elevated acceleration fields could intensify the operation of the multi-phase processes involved in an absorption heat pump cycle. He goes on to say ... 

For a chemical reaction to be carried out on an industrial scale, conditions for high reaction rates are usually preferred. In the case of two- or multi-phase processes we often encounter the situation b described above. This means that we have to look at the reactor primarily as a contacting device. The reactor configuration, by which we bring the phases together, will then have a significant influence on both the reaction rate and on the selectivity.
