The United States has also used trade and investment measures to influence the conduct of other States. For example, during the 1990s, Congress drew a link between the human rights record of China with most-favoured nations treatment of the World Trade Organization. There have also been instances where goods from States are banned from importation to the United States unless that State complies with certain standards set in U.S. law.
