Morphinane sodium

To a solution of 199 parts of morphinane sodium in 900 parts of methanol was added a solution of 60 parts of benzene sulfonic acid methylethyl ester. The mixture was stirred at heating to give the ethylmorphine. 

The methylation of 51.4 parts by weight of D,L-3-hydroxy-N-methyl-morphinan is carried out with a methylating solution obtained from 51.5 parts by weight of phenyl-trimethyl-ammonium-chloride. The D,L-3-methoxy-N-methyl-morphinan is isolated in the form of its hydrobromide, which melts with 1 mol of water at 92°-94°C, without water at 239°-240°C. The base isolated from the aqueous solution by means of sodium carbonate melts at 81°-83 C. 

Treatment of (16-3) with sodium borohydride leads to the selective reduction of the enamine bond to lead to the tetrahydropyridine (16-4). This intermediate undergoes ring closure with a strong acid to give the benzomorphan (16-5) in direct analogy to the more complex morphinans. The product consists predominantly of the isomer that bears the equatorial secondary methyl group [18],... 

Interaction of morphin, trimethylphenylammonium chloride and sodium hydroxide in methanol give the morphinan-6-a-ol, 7,8-didehydro-4,5-a-epoxy-3-methoxy-17-methyl. Then the free base was converted into phosphate.
