Aldose Monosaccharide

An intramolecular ether (commonly called an intramolecular anhydride), formally arising by elimination of water from two hydroxy groups of a single molecule of a monosaccharide (aldose or ketose) or monosaccharide derivative, is named by attaching the (detachable) prefix anhydro- preceded by a pair of locants identifying the two hydroxy groups involved. [Pg.118]

Part I. NATURAL MONOSACCHARIDES ALDOSES AND KETOSES (Contimied)... [Pg.2592]

There are two series of simple monosaccharides aldoses, which contain an aldehyde group, and ketoses, which contain a ketone group. Simple monosaccharides are also classified by the munber of carbon atoms which they contain e.g., trioses (3 C), tetroses (4 C), pentoses (5 C), and hexoses (6 C). The two naming systems are combined e.g., glucose is an aldohexose as it is a six-carbon monosaccharide with an aldehyde group. [Pg.64]

Monosaccharides, aldoses and ketoses, are divided - according to the number of carbons in the chain - into trioses, tetroses, pentoses, hexoses and higher sugars, and into aldotrioses, ketotrioses and so on. The carbon chain of monosaccharides present in foods is usually linear, but branched-chain monosaccharides also exist. [Pg.211]
