Moment orientation, nuclear magnetic resonance

The nuclear magnetic resonance phenomenon occurs for certain nuclei that possess a magnetic moment g. When placed in a magnetic field, nuclear moments will align themselves in a discrete number of orientations. The number of orientations is determined by the nuclear spin I, which is a fundamental property of certain nuclei and has values of 0, 1/2, 1, 3/2, etc. The number of allowed orientations of a nucleus is given by 21 - - 1. The most commonly observed nuclei in... [Pg.3440]

The AlP nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum of a corundum or a-AlgOg single crystal is an orientation-dependent quintet arising from the quadrupole moment = - - 0.149 (136-139). O Reilly (140) obtained the Al dispersion mode envelope (141) powder pattern spectrum which results when y-alumina is heated to 1400°, and thereby eonverted to a-AlaOs. He interpreted the line shape in terms of the Redfield modification (142,143) of the Bloch equations. [Pg.279]

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is based on the fact that certain nuclei exhibit a magnetic moment, oriented by a magnetic field, and absorb characteristic frequencies in the radioftequency part of the spectrum. The spectral fines of the nuclei are highly influenced by the chemical environment, i.e. the structure and interaction of the molecules. Magnetic properties of nuclei have been known since 1924 and the first Nuclear Magnetic Resonance experiment was performed in 1945. [Pg.4074]
