Molecular dynamics orbital calculations

Once you have calculated an ab initio or a semi-empirical wave function via a single point calculation, geometry optimization, molecular dynamics or vibrations, you can plot the electrostatic potential surrounding the molecule, the total electronic density, the spin density, one or more molecular orbitals /i, and the electron densities of individual orbitals You can examine orbital energies and select orbitals for plotting from an orbital energy level diagram. [Pg.124]

The basic idea underlying AIMD is to compute the forces acting on the nuclei by use of quantum mechanical DFT-based calculations. Heteroindacenes have been prepared and studied by Hafner and co-workers.198 199 The syntheses of 1,3,5,7-tetra-te/t-butyl-4-azaindacene, its AA-oxide, and l,3,5,7-tetra-tot-butyl-4-phospha-s-indacenes have been recently reported (Scheme 66).200 The 12-jt-electron delocalized systems have been studied by dynamic NMR and X-ray and were subjected to molecular orbital calculations, and there is strong evidence of electron delocalization. However, X-ray crystallographic data for 4-phospha-s-indacene 164 and the 4-7V-oxide 164 show that there is a dual orientation in the crystal this disorder with two different orientations of the molecule does not allow for conclusions regarding bond lengths or delocalization, and the mediated structures show a D2h symmetry rather than C2h with localized double bonds. [Pg.24]

There are (at least) two major opportunities for research by those interested in this topic. On the computational side, there is definite room for improvement in simulation methods. Right now none of the simulation approaches has the user friendliness that has brought electronic-structure calculation into the realm of routine applicability by nonspecialists. Nor has the field seen the development of the qualitative or semiquantitative models that did so much to make the results of molecular orbital calculations useful to organic chemists. On the experimental side, it will be obvious to the reader that the techniques for detecting the effects of nonstatistical dynamics are still very rudimentary and indirect. There is clearly room for creative scientists to come up with techniques whose results can give us more direct insight into these issues. [Pg.956]
