Model-building Approaches

The literature is full of examples of many types of conformational sampling algorithms [17-20]. Some of the principal ones are the model building approach [21], genetic algorithms [22, 23], the Monte Carlo (MC) [24] and simulated annealing [25] protocols.

Bies et al. (2003) compared the stepwise model building approach to the GA approach. Three different stepwise approaches were used forward stepwise starting from a base model with no covariates, and a backwards elimination approach starting from a full model with all covariates, and then forward addition to a full model followed by backwards elimination to retain only the most important covariates. Bies et al. found that the GA approach identified a model a full 30 points lower based on objective function value than the other three methods and that the GA algorithm identified important...

Compare GAM or equivalent technique to more rigorous single-step insertion techniques within a model-building approach. 

Conventional model building methods have, however, recently enabled elucidation of the framework stroctures of Montesommaite [46], ZSM-18 [47], ZSM-57 [48], A1P04-52 [49] and VPI-5 [50]. The stracture of ZSM-18 had perplexed zeolite crystallographers for many years. Background. To understand why this is a difficult, but import task, we need to understand what a salt dome is, its properties, how to image it and the problems associated with that.
