The Oslo fluidized-bed crystallizer has separate sections for the generation of supersaturation and for crystal suspension and growth (Figure 3.3 (iii)). Supersaturation is created externally e.g. by eooling or evaporation and the liquor pumped into a central downeomer in the main vessel. A elassified bed of crystals is supported in the vessel by an upward flowing stream of supersaturated liquor in the armular spaee surrounding the downcomer. Relatively large crystals of mean size say >1000 pm are withdrawn from the base. In an effort to increase efficiency, however, modem practice is frequently to operate Oslo units in the mixed-suspension mode. [Pg.65]

For an atom in a solid, vibratory motion involves potential energy as well as kinetic ener, and both modes will contribute a term l/2kT, resulting in an average total energy of 3kT. Thus, it is the entropy of mixing that forces the creation of a certain number of vacant lattice positions above 0.0 °K. Hence, vacancies are the natural resultof thermod5mamic equilibrium md not the result of accidental growth or sample preparation. [Pg.125]

Another study of a synthetic siderophore analog of mixed cathechol and hydroxamate donor groups exhibited similar spectral shifts with pH as observed for tris-catecholate side-rophores, consistent with a salicylate-binding mode shift (102). While this synthetic siderophore mimic supports the growth of many species of bacteria, it also exhibits a low iron-binding affinity relative to other hexadentate siderophores, with a pFe value of 18.3 (see L(cat2hydroxamate) Table HE). [Pg.201]

Since its introduction in 1971, SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis) has become the most popular analog simulation tool in use today. In the last 15 years, we have seen explosive growth in the use of SPICE, with the addition of Berkeley SPICE 3 enhancements, and support for C code model and mixed-mode simulation using XSPICE (Cox et al. 1992, Kielkowski 1994).We have also seen many new companies emerge as developers of SPICE-based simulation tools, most of which are currently available for the PC platform. [Pg.1]
