Miscellaneous Classes

PHENYLPIPERIDINES, PYRROLIDINES AND RELATED COMPOUNDS ACYCLIC AND MISCELLANEOUS CLASSES ANTAGONISTS OF ANALGESICS... 

Two further miscellaneous classes of macrocyclic metal complexes are included in this section because they have structural features such as aza linkages and a high degree of unsaturation associated with fused aromatic rings. Ogawa and coworkers have shown that when 2,4-di-chloro-l,10-phenanthroline is fused with ammonium tetrachlorozincate, a macrocyclic zinc complex is produced. The metal can be removed subsequently by acidic treatment (Scheme 57).244 The free macrocycle can also be prepared by non-template methods, which however do not appear to be as effective as they require reaction of the dichlorophenanthroline with 2,9-diaminophen-anthroline.245... 

Miscellaneous class reactions. (Section 9.3.) Determine the effect of the following class reagents upon small portions of the original mixture (i) bromine in dichloro-methane solution (ii) potassium permanganate solution (iii) alcoholic silver nitrate solution (iv) 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine reagent (v) SchifFs reagent (vi) acetyl chloride (vii) benzoyl chloride (in the presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide) (viii) sodium (only if water is absent) (ix) iron(m) chloride solution and (x) bromine water. 

Some miscellaneous classes, including several new classes of insecticides, have recently been developed that possess different structures compared with those described previously. 

A number of drugs of miscellaneous class are capable of producing various degrees of renal damage and will be reviewed in this Chapter. Some have been used extensively in the past for the treatment of general infections (sulfonamides), others have had specific indications (pentamidine, dapsone), and others such as quinolones are of more recent application. Many of these, however, are of current interest because of their use in treating the complications occurring in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). 

Styrene Resins Other Uses. This miscellaneous class has been shown on the tariff report since 1949 on a monthly basis (P). Prior to that time polystyrene was not broken down by end use. 

Because the miscellaneous class includes a large number of resins and the exact composition of the class may vary from year to year and certainly varies from monthly figures to annual figures and from census to tariff figures, it is quite difficult to analyze these figures with any degree of comparability.
