Various catalysts have been used, but now, the preferred one is believed to be a supported palladium/gold alloy catalyst. Developed in 1980 by Lyondell Chemical Technology, formerly Millennium Petrochemicals, and used in their plant in La Porte, TX. See also Vacido. Also a trademark used by LyondellBasell Industries. 

To examine the further influence of introducing variable chemistry surface pretreatment with ozone, atmospheric plasma trials were performed on an Enercon atmospheric plasma pilot line. The extrusion coating trial runs were performed on a Lyondell Equistar Millennium Petrochemical extrusion coating pilot line. Eor all extrudate trials, a LDPE film was coated onto OPP and PET film. The samples were prepared and tested according to ASTM test method E88. The heat seal tests were made on a heat seal machine using a pressure p = 206.8 kPa and a dwell time T= 1 s. 

The next year, 1990, Lyondell purchased, from the Rexene Products Company, the low-density polyethylene and polypropylene plants built in Bayport, Texas, by El Paso Products Company in the 1970s. In 1995, the Alathon HOPE business was acquired from Occidental Chemical Corporation for 356 million. In 1997, Lyondell combined its petrochemical and polymer businesses with those of Millennium Chemicals (which itself had recently been formed from the Quanmm Chemical Company, which had been the largest producer of polyethylene in the USA) to form Equistar Chemicals as a joint venture. Occidental Chemical s petrochemical business became the third part of Equistar in 1998.
